The German Shepherd is the perfect dog to own. Their impeccable intelligence and trainability allows them to not only be a superb guard or protection dog but also the perfect addition to any family. Arguably, no other dog is more loyal, obedient, and eager to please!

Location: We are professional German Shepherd breeders located in beautiful NorthWest Wisconsin, just about an hour East of Minneapolis / St. Paul, Minnesota in a rural area near Menomonie, Wisconsin. We are only 15 minutes from I-94 and very easy to get to.

We may not have the best website, but what we lack in a website, we more than make up for in our quality dogs and their environment! It seems like everyone has German Shepherd puppies for sale nowadays… how do you know if you are getting a quality dog and not getting ripped off… or worse… end up with a dog that becomes a dangerous liability or has chronic or even fatal health issues. Being AKC registered is certainly NOT a guarantee of proper temperament, high intelligence, excellent conformation or good health. In the USA, breeders have freedom to breed whatever they want, with almost zero limitations or requirements. So it is really up to the knowledge and integrity of the breeder to provide you with a quality dog, so do your research! The breeder should care about their reputation and they should also be State licensed and inspected. Longevity (time in business) is another potential method to judge a breeder. Select K9's has been around for 15+ years!

Over the past couple of decades we have seen many breeders come and go… with their average time in business ranging from 3-5 years. It seems like most people vastly underestimate the incredible amount of knowledge, time, work and commitment that it takes to become a quality breeder. It is literally blood, sweat and tears at times. Being a responsible breeder means doing the research for quality genetics, providing an environment where dogs can flourish, and properly caring for both the physical and mental needs of the dogs and puppies. A responsible breeder also makes sure that their puppies are placed in amazing, loving forever homes! A reputable breeder will back their dog’s health with a written contract and will help re-home or take back a dog when the owner can no longer keep the dog, due to unforeseen circumstances. A responsible breeder will NEVER allow one of their dogs to end up in a shelter. It is in our contract that we have "first right of refusal" and that we simply must be contacted in the event that one of our dogs are not able to stay placed in their home. A breeder that cares about their dogs will always do an interview before placing a puppy in a home.

Many back yard breeders (and puppy mills) are simply breeding to make some extra money, they may not care about improving the breed. They may not be aware of the genetics that they are breeding (or care), it is possible that they do not invest into their dog’s/puppy's environment, they may not have the knowledge on how to properly care for their dogs & pups! The puppies may not get the proper vet visits, or be vaccinated, or be de-wormed or even checked for disease/deformities, and they most likely will not come with any health guarantee. It is also possible that they will not be in business at the time that you have trouble with your dog!  Not all breeders are created equal and not all back yard breeders are bad… but once again do your research. If you find “real” quality bloodlines for cheaper and the dog’s temperaments are sound, they come with a health guarantee, and the environment checks out… then buy it, but please do extensive research first… you owe it to the parents of your puppy and you owe it to yourself and your family. Learning to recognize “quality” bloodlines does take some knowledge, so get a book or ask a reputable breeder for help.

*The initial cost of a puppy can be quite small in comparison to a few Vet visits, due to some serious health issues… or if you have a dog that is weak nerved, cannot be trusted, and becomes a liability. We pride ourselves in educating our customers before and after they purchase a puppy from us, we are ALWAYS available for any assistance and advice in the future. Our relationship does not stop after you buy your puppy.

Puppy Mills: Please - if you do not buy a German Shepherd puppy from us... then please do not purchase one from a mass producer puppy mill. Do your homework, make sure they invest time, money and love into their dogs. Anyone can make a fancy website and spend a lot of money on advertising. Properly socializing a puppy not only makes for a happier, safer, more stable dog, but also makes for a happier dog owner!

* Select K9's, LLC is a state licensed and inspected kennel.  State license # 403530-DS

* Unless otherwise noted, all of our puppies will come with "limited registration" (no breeding rights).  Please ask us if you are interested in breeding.

*ALL of our breeding dogs have either OFA hip certifications or the German (A) stamp "normal" for hip & elbow certifications.

Care: Ask the important questions... same type of questions you would ask of a daycare provider caring for your children. Under most circumstances the breeder should let you see their facility. Make sure the breeder has made every attempt to make the dogs as comfortable as possible, including: an insulated warm place to get out of the cold, an area to get out of the sun with good ventilation, and plenty of space to run, exercise and have freedom of movement. The kennels should be well built, secure, clean and have plenty of places for the dogs to lay. Dogs spend a lot of time in their kennels... just like you do in your house... they like to have several places to lounge around.

Our Dogs: With outstanding pedigrees at 1/2 - 1/3 the price of competitors, having a small Kennel business in rural Wisconsin is a way of life which beholds old fashioned values and morals, it is not a get rich scheme. We feel other people should be able to enjoy the same things we do without having to pay 2-3 times more.

Check pedigrees and prices. If you find something better and cheaper, buy it... this is what we all do.  We breed Champion West German bloodlines with strong Schutzhund ancestry, most of which are "V" or "VA" rated and KKL1.  Our studs are imported from Europe, as well as some of our females.  ALL of our breeding dog's hips are OFA certified or have the German (A) stamp for hip certification.

Our dogs and puppies are 100% spoiled with the love and attention that our three children give them. This makes for a well rounded, social dog that is tolerant and safe as a family pet. G.S. dogs from Germany and the Czech Republic have been bred for intelligence and drive. They are intelligent enough to know when to fearlessly "turn-it-on" and get nasty with an intruder or other "serious" threat and yet be gentle enough to know when a little kid is playing too rough! It is not surprising to hear that these amazing dogs are often willing to give their life for any one of their family members... just as they do for police officers every year. European dogs are bred first for quality then for looks... quite the opposite in "some" of the lower-end American bred shepherds. This is why most Police dogs are imported from over seas... they need the intelligence, stability and self confidence to evaluate a situation and then know "WHEN" or "WHEN NOT".

*In the increasingly violent world that we live in, it is a calming feeling to know that you have added one more level of security to your home and family!

But, I don’t need a “show” puppy… I just want a great pet!
This is a common statement that I often hear when talking with clients.  However, what many people do not realize is that the same qualities that judges are looking for in a champion German Shepherd, are the same exact qualities that a Pet owner is looking for in a “quality” pet.  For example, a judge may look for the following in a champion “GERMAN” show dog:

- They look for good health… without good health, nothing else matters. In Germany they must X-ray the dog’s hips and have them certified “before” breeding.  Sadly, many dogs are euthanized every year due to poor health and/or increased medical bills.
- They look for intelligence… everyone wants a dog that is smart and easy to train.
- They look for self-confidence… without self-confidence, the dog may never be able to offer protection and can actually become a “fear biter” which is a dog that over-reacts in situations, like a small child pulling it’s ears/tail or smacking them with a toy.  A dog with good self-confidence knows that the child is not a threat and therefore can simply walk away.  A dog without self-confidence can become a liability!
- They look for athletic ability/agility…  No one wants a clumsy dog or a dog that cannot exercise properly with it’s owner.  Whether it’s playing competitive fetch in the back yard or competing in a local dog sport.  Good athletic ability/agility can also be tied to good health, especially when looking at endurance.
- They look for good temperament…  A quality German Shepherd should not be a “sharp” dog that reacts quickly without thinking.  They should not be overly reactive and should be able to accept other dogs and other people… of course much of this has to do with the owner properly socializing them at a young age.
- They look for good drive levels… No one wants a dog that is a squirrel and/or bouncing off the walls with no OFF switch, yet most want a dog that will run/walk with them, play fetch and keep up with the kids!
- They look at Conformation…  Of course beauty and good conformation is always important, everyone wants a beautiful dog that makes heads turn, but it should NOT be the only quality that is being measured… it is just part of the package that comes with getting a great German Shepherd! :)

Mfg. assemblers, Engineers, Doctors, Surgeons, Police officers, Nurses, EMTs, Firefighter, Custodians, DNR officers, Veterinarians, Dog trainers, Business owners, FBI agent, Detectives, U.S. Airline Marshal, Airline stewardess, Pilots, DOT operators, Retail clerks, Waitresses, Tattoo Artist, Jeweler, Factory/company employees, Salesmen, Military vets, CEO’s of corporations, Company managers, Heavy machinery operators, Mechanic, Contractors/tradesmen, Farmers, Teachers, Pastors, Hunters, Truck drivers, Bankers, Professional drivers (chauffeur), Stay at home moms, Daycare owners, College students, The retired, Senior citizens, NFL football player (pending) and many, many more!  These are some of the careers that we could recall from memory, all have purchased one or more puppies. We often do not know our client's occupation, unless they volunteer to tell us, as we typically do not ask.

Where are Select K9’s puppies sold?
A couple of our puppies have traveled across the ocean to find themselves in amazing homes in other countries (Italy, Greece, Germany). In the USA, we have our puppies ranging from as far South as Texas, as far North/West as Alaska and as far East as the Carolinas. The majority of our puppies are placed in great homes from Minnesota, with Minneapolis / St. Paul being the most common city that we see, although the Rochester area is quickly becoming popular as well.  We are always amazed at how many of our clients come from South Dakota and Western Minnesota. We have had several come from Northern Minnesota and only a handful from North Dakota. We also have a significant amount of people coming from the Chicago, Illinois area and Southern Illinois. Iowa is slowly becoming more and more common as well. We have had a couple customers come from Indiana and someone drove 11 1/2 hours from Cincinnati, Ohio (23 hours total drive time!) to get their puppy from us. We have only had a few from Michigan, with most being from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  Of course, we also place a lot of our German Shepherd puppies in our beautiful home state of Wisconsin! :)  Although, Northern Wisconsin has not been as prevalent as Southern Wisconsin. The Milwaukee and Madison area has a much higher population, with a higher number of German Shepherd Clubs and dog enthusiasts searching for top quality, Champion German bloodlines with amazing pedigrees, from a reputable breeder.
In the future, we hope to have our top quality, German Shepherd puppies in many other states as well, so we invite customers from Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York and even Canada!  We Welcome visitors from all over (with an appointment) as we love to give tours of our kennel and let people meet our dogs. We typically do a phone interview first, to make sure that our puppies are going to great homes and to make sure that our puppies are a good match for you! :)  We just want everyone to be happy!  If you are interested, please go to the “contact us” page of our website. Thank You!
